Text Message Marketing and Spas & Salons, the perfect fit!

How Text Message Marketing for Hair Salons Can Keep Customers Happy and Books Full

When I worked as a hairstylist, as an operations manager at a salon and spa, and then as a manager at a large massage chain, the same question continually came up:
How do I increase the number of visits and referrals, as well as the retail revenue?
This is probably a question you struggle with on a daily basis, if not hourly, at your salon, spa or clinic. I know the answer to that question, as well as how to decrease cancellations. Now that I have your attention…The answer is: text message marketing!
What three things does every person take with them in the morning when they leave the house? Purse/wallet, keys and cell phone. The number of text messages people send and receive daily exceeds the planet’s total population.
The world of marketing has moved from the television to the computer to the cell phone, otherwise known as the “third screen.” As the beauty industry expands and changes you will need to change your marketing strategy to include the third screen. This will help with the daily struggle of increasing visits, referrals and retail revenue. How is that possible? Let me show you!

Increasing visits with text messaging

Have you ever asked a client to prebook their next appointment just have them tell you they don’t have their planner or don’t know their schedule? With text messaging you can remind them 4 weeks, 2 weeks and then 1 week prior to when they should be in for a follow-up appointment.
For example, if a client comes in for a haircut and color and does not prebook, a reminder text is sent 4 weeks prior to when they should follow up. Then, if they still haven’t scheduled, a second text is sent 2 weeks later as another reminder to book their haircut and color. A third text is sent the week prior to their scheduled follow-up, and if the client still hasn’t booked, no additional messages are sent for that appointment.
By utilizing text message marketing you are able to lower the number of calls from clients begging to squeeze you in at the last minute and thus manage your schedule more efficiently.

Increasing referrals and decreasing no -shows

Send appointment reminders through text messaging to fill up a day that falls apart. For example, your day starts out with a booked schedule, but all of a sudden clients start canceling left and right.
Send out a quick text offering a special to your database of clients. You will not only fill your day, but those clients may forward your text to their friends and family, who may call and schedule with you too. BOOM! You’ll have new clients and your day will be chock-full again.

Increasing retail revenue

Another way you can use text message marketing to grow your business is to send a text out about retail specials you are running or new products that came out. Everyone likes a special on their favorite product or on new products that just hit the shelves.
Once I had a salon owner who was not totally sold on text messaging as a way to promote her business, but who needed to do something. She started out by just getting her clients to opt in to her text club. One day her books totally fell apart; she had been booked back to back. Imagine how much she was going to make that day.
She was totally devastated when all her clients started rescheduling, so she sent out a text blast offering a special just for that day. Within the hour her phone was ringing off the hook. Once she was booked again, she continued to fill in the spots she had open within the next few weeks all because she had reminded clients to book with a simple text. This is just one success story that shows how effective text message marketing can be.
